Taiwanese-American flutist Yuh-Jiun (Melody) Wan is an avid soloist, chamber musician, and educator. As a dedicated educator, Melody is the Flute Lecturer at Southeastern Louisiana University. She previously served as the flute faculty at the Orchepia School of Music, the Learning Tree Academy in California, and was the Flute Teaching Assistant at Louisiana State University. She also maintains an active private studio, in which her students have won numerous competitions as well as auditions for prestigious youth orchestras.

 

As a soloist, Melody has won first place in the Taiwan Music Competition, the Louisiana Flute Society Solo Masterclass Competition, and the Cadenza Competition at the CSU Summer Arts Festival. She also received top prizes at the California State University Long Beach Flute Competition. She has performed in concerts across Asia, North America, South America, and Europe.

An avid chamber musician, Melody is the founder and flutist of the Vermillion Duet, a clarinet and flute duo who is currently serving under the 2021 Digital Artist Residency with Chamber Music America. The Vermillion duet has performed at the Seattle Flute Society Festival, the San Diego Flute Guild Spring Festival, the Louisiana Old State Capital, and the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana Benjamín Carrión in Ecuador. Dr. Wan also held the Woodwind Quintet Fellowship at Bob Cole Conservatory from 2016-2017. She was a part of the Graduate Woodwind Quintet at LSU, which won the second prize at the NOLA Chamber Festival in 2018.

 

Passionate about early music, Melody studied the Baroque flute with Dr. John Barcellona and performed in the Collegium Musicum at Bob Cole Conservatory. She has performed in a masterclass with Mary Oleskiewicz at the Los Angeles Flute Guild’s Baroque Flute Camp. She has also participated in the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, where she studied Baroque flute on scholarship with Jed Wentz.

 

Melody holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Louisiana State University. She obtained the Performance Diploma, Diplôme Supérieur d'Enseignement de Flûte Traversière, from École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot in France in 2020. She earned a Master of Music degree from the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her primary instructors include Jill Felber, John Barcellona, Mihi Kim, and Katherine Kemler.
